Le Département de français vous offre de découvrir les œuvres d’écrivains de tous les horizons , français, franco-ontariens, québécois, franco-canadiens et francophones de Belgique, du Maghreb, d’Afrique noire et des Antilles , et de toutes les périodes, du Moyen Âge à l’époque contemporaine. Leurs textes constituent le matériau le plus riche pour appréhender la diversité et la complexité des sociétés, la psychologie et le comportement d’autrui et, finalement, pour mieux vous connaître vous-même. Dans le monde d’aujourd’hui, caractérisé par l’intensification des échanges interculturels découlant de la mondialisation, l’ouverture aux cultures et leur compréhension sera pour vous un atout essentiel.
Vous pourrez accroître et affiner vos capacités d’analyse, de compréhension et d’interprétation par la lecture approfondie d’œuvres selon des approches théoriques variées (sémiotique, narratologique, historique, sociocritique, psychocritique, mythocritique, féministe, etc.). Vous mettrez ces qualités à profit chaque fois que vous vous trouverez face à un texte, même un texte non littéraire.
Enfin, l’étude de la littérature et sa mise en rapport avec d’autres arts comme la peinture, la musique et le cinéma vous feront connaître les différentes composantes et dimensions de l’objet artistique, de façon à mieux l’apprécier, voire pour vous engager vous-même sur la voie de la création.
Profil étudiant recherché
Si vous aimez les relations avec les enfants ou les jeunes, si vous avez envie de les former et de leur transmettre vos connaissances, faire carrière dans l’enseignement, primaire ou secondaire, c’est pour vous. Si, en plus, vous avez un goût pour la recherche, l’enseignement supérieur vous comblera.
Le français n’est pas votre langue maternelle et vous vous destinez à l’enseignement du français en milieu anglophone? Notre programme en French vous est réservé. Il comporte entre autres des cours qui mettent l’accent sur la culture et la civilisation.
Enfin, si vous rêvez d’écrire des romans, des poèmes, des chansons ou du théâtre , non seulement vous bénéficierez de votre fréquentation des grands auteurs, mais vous pourrez également suivre des cours de création littéraire, donnés par nos professeurs qui sont écrivains et par un écrivain qui, chaque année, séjourne dans notre département. Vous pourrez même poursuivre cette voie à la maîtrise et au doctorat.
To become open to the world and better understand it
The Department of Français invites you to discover the works of writers from all over— France, Franco-Ontario, Québec, French Canada, French-speaking Belgium, the Maghreb, Black Africa and the West Indies — and from every period, from the Middle Ages up to the present day. Their works are fertile ground for apprehending the diversity and complexity of societies, the psychology and behaviour of others and, ultimately, for gaining a better understanding of oneself. In today’s world, with the increasing cultural exchanges brought about by globalization , an openess to and understanding of other cultures will serve you well.
You will strengthen and refine your ability to analyse, understand and interpret, through the close reading of these works employing a wide range of theoretical approaches (semiotic, narratological, historical, sociocritical, psychocritical, mythocritical, feminist, etc.). You will make good use of these skills every time you encounter a text, even a non-literary one.
Finally, the study of literature and how it relates to other art forms, such as painting, music and film, will give you an introduction to and better appreciation of the various components and aspects of artistic pursuit, and perhaps even stimulate your own creativity.
Student profile
If you enjoy interacting with young children or adolescents, if you want to educate them and impart your knowledge to them, a career in primary or secondary education is for you. If, in addition to that, you like to do research, then you will find higher education fulfilling.
If French is not your mother tongue and you are planning to teach French in an English-speaking setting , our French program is for you. The course offering puts the accent on culture and civilization.
Finally, if your dream is to write novels, poetry, song lyrics or plays, you will enjoy spending time with the great writers, as well as have an opportunity to take courses in creative writing, taught by our author-professors and the department’s writer in residence. You can even continue along this path at the Master’s and PhD levels.
